In almost every country in the world, the proportion of older people in the population is increasing. By 2050, the number of people above 65 years old is expected to double compared with 2020, growing from 9.3% to more than 16% of the global population. Therefore, the World Health Organization (WHO) is expecting a significant rise in neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia: today, approximately 55 million people around the globe are suffering from this debilitating and disorienting illness.
